Heavenly: Saastal
Saas-Fee (Saastal)
100 per cent winter: Under the piercing blue Valais sky, 18 peaks topping 4,000 m are gathered around the slopes of the Saas valley.
There are pistes for every taste and ability – even in summer, thanks to the glacier. The facilities for snowboarders are legendary: Saas- Fee is one of the top spots for riders anywhere. Conditions are also perfect for nearly every other kind of winter activity – from telemark to ice climbing and hikes by torchlight.
Traditional
From buzzing Saas-Fee to the quaint villages of Saas-Grund, Saas- Almagell and Saas-Balen, the traditional Valais ambience is unmistakable. The picturesque old wooden houses, the down-to-earth welcome of the locals and, in the evening, the mouth-watering aroma of a cheese fondue being prepared all contribute to the valley's unique charm.
Three records
You can be up among the peaks in no time: travelling on the world's highest underground railway up to the highest revolving restaurant, on Mittelallalin (3,500 m). Close by sparkles the world's largest ice grotto. The view up here extends to the peaks of the Bernese Oberland and Graubünden – and on very clear days, as far as Milan.
Top tip
The toboggan run from Kreuzboden to Saas-Grund is 11 km long and terrific fun from top to bottom. Once a week it also opens at night. Access the run in comfort by riding up on the modern eight-person gondola.
