Engadine St. Moritz

Pure sunshine: The mountains, the space, the light… This region on the southern side of the Swiss Alps is famous for its uplifting open vistas, its dramatic mountain backdrop, and its exceptionally sunny climate: skies are blue for 322 days a year.
That’s a record for Switzerland – as well as the reason for the celebrated soft light that has long inspired writers and painters.

Sparkling Champagne climate

But of course they are not the only ones to enjoy relaxing in the Engadine. Thanks to its unique lake-andmountain landscape and the variety of facilities and services on offer, the largest ski region in Switzerland is also one of the most popular. Its fame worldwide is primarily due to St. Moritz, one of the most elegant and exclusive resorts anywhere. Here winter sports were invented, more than 150 years ago; the first light bulb unveiled in Switzerland, in 1878; the first skilift installed, in 1935. It has staged not one but two Winter Olympic Games. A couple of the most historic hotels in Switzerland are here. But above all, it is the international jet set that creates the resort’s Champagne mood, adding to its worldwide fame winter after winter.

Top tip

Powered by the Maloja wind, skiers and snowboarders glide over frozen Lake Silvaplana behind colourful kites. The area is known as the birthplace of snowkiting; beginners can learn the ropes at a dedicated school.

How to get there

Public Transport: Take a train of the Swiss Federal Railway (Schweizerische Bundesbahn, SBB) to Chur. Once there, change trains and take the Rhaetian Railway (Rhätische Bahn, RhB) to continue your journey.

The train route through the Grisons to the ENGADIN with its tunnel turns and viaducts bridging giddy heights is one of the most interesting and picturesque routes of Europe. Since November 1999 there is also the possibility of taking the line through the Vereina tunnel, which shortens the trip from Zürich to St. Moritz, for example, to less than three and a half hours.
