Not many cities have managed to retain their historic features quite as successfully as Bern, the capital of Switzerland. The old town of Bern has been entered in the list of UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Sites and thanks to its 6 kilometres of arcades - the locals refer to them as 'Lauben' - boasts on of the longest weather-sheltered shopping promenades in Europe.
The Old Town of Bern
With its 6 km of limestone buildings andmedieval arcades, its Renaissance fountainswith colorful figures, and its beautiful cathedralsurrounded by picturesque rooftops,Bern, founded in 1191,i s truly a gem of medievalarchitecture in Europe.

Bear Pit
Since the restoration of the Bear Pit in 1996, the animals are not just kept in a pit. The newly designed landscape offers the animals rocks and caves, a fir tree for climbing, a deep water basin for swimming and several substrata under ground. A landscape where some rare plants florish according to the season, and where animals have to find their food themselves daily - unless the visitor offers the bear a snack in the form of food appropriate for this species of animal. The food can be bought from the bear guard.

Rosengarten
Bern's most beautiful and romantic park with about 220 different kinds of roses. Wonderful view of the Old Town and the Aare loop.
