Do you know how Swiss people lived a long time ago? Do you know how to carve wood, to weave baskets or to spin? How to burn charcoal? Have you ever seen how bread was baked in a coal-burning stove? How cheese is fabricated? Ballenbergt shows you Switzerland as it once used to be.Rural life from bygone days makes a vivid impression with the more than 100 century-old buildings from all over Switzerland, 250 farmyard animals, historical gardens and fields, demonstrations of typical crafts and many special events. And they all make the Ballenberg a unique place.

At the Ballenberg Open-Air Museum you can visit 100 original, centuries-old houses and farmhouses from all over Switzerland; explore "historical" gardens and fields; and make a journey of discovery in our large medicinal plant garden. You can see examples of all the different kinds of farm animals that are to be found in Switzerland; and in the workshops, watch craftspeople demonstrating old handicrafts and trades: charcoal burning, forging, baking, cheese making, weaving, shingle making, and much more. A lively programme of events gives a special insight into rural customs of both past and present.

Here, you can experience the whole of Switzerland: in an area just 1.7 km long and 500 m across.
