This is an unusual Cathedral, which took a few hundred years to complete. The edifice dates back to the year 1160 and had to endure a good number of delays and changes. One of the most decisive changes took place in the 15th century, in the austere era of the Reformation. The altar, the statues, paintings and furniture were removed from the Cathedral. Only the few stained glass windows remained. The entire Gothic facade was later transformed into the present Neo-Classical style.
For many visitors the breathtaking view of the city, after climbing 175 steps in the narrow stairwell of the North Tower, is a high point literally and figuratively.
The Cathedral also has an important archeological side, dating from the beginning of Christianity to the 12th century. A baptismal font from the 4th century, mosaics from the 5th century, gems, layered graphics and much more are exhibited.

Five hundred and seven steps lead you to the top of the north tower of the cathedral, where you can enjoy a fantastic view over the town and the lake. Then there is la Clémence, which, at a weight of six tonnes, is the cathedral's largest bell and was hoisted up into this same tower in 1407.
