Far from the heavily frequented tourist destinations, the densely forested and sparsely populated Val Colla extends eastward from Lugano. It is a veritable paradise for mountain bikers and hikers. The greater part of the San Lucio tour runs through the shady northern edge of the Denti della Vecchia, a striking formation of peaks which indeed could remind one of an -Old woman's teeth-, as the Italian name implies. The frequently challenging trails and paths open up spectacular vistas. The tour's highlight is the San Lucio Chapel, which bestrides the Swiss-Italian border.
Sonvico - M.Roveraccio - Madonna d'Arla - Piandera - San Lucio - Bocchetta di San Bernardo - Pianca Bella - Cimadera - Rosone - Sonvico
The tour begins in the picturesque village of Sonvico. A forest trails leads up to Monte Roveraccio. The view of the Gulf of Lugano is overwhelmingly beautiful. Your tour takes you past the Chapel of Madonna d'Arla and into the valley up to Cimadera. Shortly before the village starts the long ascent on an Alpine trail up to San Lucio. Starting from here the tour follows a narrow path over to Bocchetta di San Bernardo and further on to Pianca Bella. On a few occasions you will have to push your bike on this leg of the tour. The tour conveys you on a rough steep gravel path to Cimadera. The tour returns at first to Sonvio via a hiking trail and then via the road.
