In the Late Middle Ages it was predominantly the regional traders who transported goods on the back of mules from the Bernese Oberland to Valais. Today the classic Gemmi hike is very popular with hiking fans. This brings home to the biker that the trails were not created just for him. The landscape around Lake Dauben is sparsely grown and of austere beauty. Enormous rocks tower to the left and right of the vast and open valley basin. But the flowers on the Spittelmatte plain down below present a riot of colors. Terrific!
Gemmipass - Daubensee - Schwarenbach - Arvenseeli - Winteregg - Stock - Stierenbergli - Spittelmatte - Arvenseeli - Schwarenbach - Daubensee - Gemmipass
The tour actually starts and ends in Leukerbad. Take the cable car from Leukerbad to Gemmi. At the valley-station a trail runs along Lake Dauben to Schwarenbach. A wide and technically simple path leaves plenty of space to enjoy the scenery. From Schwarenbach the route leads to Spittelmatte, the turning point of the tour. An ascent on the other side takes you back to Schwarenbach. Finally, the tour returns along the same path to the Gemmi Pass.
