1. To travel to the start of your cycling trip or for your homeward journey
2. To shorten a long stage or because it has begun to rain
3. Too add variety e.g. combine cycling trip with boat trip
4. To master considerable height differences e.g. ascending a mountain pass
5. To avoid unattractive stretches of route

Points 3 to 5: the Cycling in Switzerland Foundation and public transport companies have named 60 recomended transport stretches and numbered them for clear identification. Each number is combined with the symbol of the relevant means of transport.

The best options for trains offering own-cycle transport for arrival from Europe are found on the German Federal Railways website at: www.bahn.de. Select 'Fahrradmitnahme' enter departure and destination points and click on 'Verbindung suchen'.
