Creux du Van: rocky amphitheatre
Creux du Van
Select your Region:

The rocky amphitheatre of the Creux du Van is undoubtedly one of the scenic highlights of the whole sweep of the Jura. 160 m high and about two kilometres long, the chain of rocks forms the shape of a horseshoe. But the fantastic views of the Creux du Van have to be earned! The difference in altitude between the starting point near Boudry and the highest point at Le Soliat must be a good 1000 m. When you get to the top, though, you forget all about the effort of the climb in an instant, as a vast panorama extending from the Bernese Alps to the Savoy opens up before you. Far below is Lake Neuchâtel. On the other side, your gaze is drawn to the mighty ring of rocks forming the Creux du Van. In the background, the gentle hills of the Jura extend as far as the eye can see. When you've finished enjoying all these views, it's back down to business. A great long downhill section on a wonderful singletrail leads down to Gorgier.
Boudry - Ferme Robert - La Grand'Vy - Creux du Van - Ferme du Soliat - Gorgier - Boudry
The route begins at Boudry station and takes you first towards the village. On the way down, you take the right-hand fork by the Restaurant du Pont and follow the cycle track signs towards Yverdon-les-Bains for a while. You ride for a good 1 km on a tarmac path above the vineyards towards Gorges de l'Areuse. This is where the long and sometimes steep climb up to the Creux du Van begins. You go past Ferme Robert to the mountain restaurant at La Grand'Vy. Then the trail follows the edge of the cliff face up to Le Soliat, but in places you will be unable to ride. A short downhill section leads down to La Baronne, before you begin the technically difficult descent to Gorgier. Continually following the footpath towards Boudry, you eventually arrive back at your starting point.
