Among the animals, there are rare deer, lynxes, wild boars, European bison, and the famed Przewalski horses. This original horse is considered the legitimate ancestor of today's domestic horse and was first found in Mongolia in 1882. Since 1970, the animal is considered to be extinct, at least in its wild and free form. Thanks to a European breeding program, the species could be preserved in zoos. The program has been so successful that in 1990, the animals have been re-released in their original habitat, the Gobi desert, in the hope that they will continue breeding on their own.
