Peak Tour to the Monte San Giorgio

Bissone

Select your Region:

The landmark peak of Monte San Giorgio is easily recognized as it rises between two arms of Lake Lugano. Its perfect emplacement make it the ideal vantage point. But the spectacular views come at a price: the ascent is long and arduous. What a good thing then that extensive chestnut forests line the way, giving hikers the well-deserved shade. On the descent be sure to stop by the Alpe Brusino, where three ancient, gnarled chestnut forests hold court.
Leave the picturesque village plaza of Riva San Vitale and continue along the hiking trail to the church of Santa Croce. Always follow the directional sign towards San Giorgio hiking on the trail that winds up the mountain. At Alp Albio the trail leads into a dale, from where it is a steep climb to the next mountain ridge. A small chapel marks the highest spot of the mountain. Then descend towards Alpe Forello. At Point 925, follow the route towards Alpe Brusino, where there is a simple restaurant. The return to Riva San Vitale follows the partly narrow but well-marked trail called the Sentioro Basso.
