The Trans Swiss Trail makes use of the existing signposts of the Swiss hiking trails, but is marked as a long distance trail by information panels (approximately 1 per kilometer). Many intersections with public transportation stations enable you to plan your route as you please - individual day trips can be designed, linked or shortened according to your preferences. Total length: approximately 500 km.

The start at Porrentruy is as follows. From the starting point, Porrentruy, the residence of a former prince-bishop, the route leads at first through the gently rolling hills of the Ajoie, an agricultural region. Influenced by its neighbor, France, as regards landscape, climate and culture, the Ajoie is quite distinct from the rest of the Jura along the Trans-Swiss-Trail-Route. The Trans Swiss Trail exhibits a spectacular change of scenery already during its first stage, when the ascent to the forested Jura crest at Les Chainions is followed by the descent to the deeply cut valley of the Doubs River.
