Beginning near the residence Alpenrose, a pathway leads across the open fields of the Sils plane to the Chastè Peninsula.
The path to the tip of the peninsula leads past picturesque bays and corner to the Nietzsche stone, which is inscribed with verses from "Thus spoke Zarathustra". The stone is situated at the tip of the peninsula, which was once a favourite-spot of this famous philosopher, who spent eight summers in Sils. On the other side of the penisula the path leads back through a dense larch and pine forest to Sils-Baselgia. The Chastè Peninsula is now a nature-reserve where unique flora and fauna are to be encountered. The name "Chastè" is dervied from a former castle, the ruins of which can be viewed on top of one of the two hills. The pathway from Sils-Baselgia via the Chastè boathouse and further to Sils-Maria is suitable for baby-carriages and wheelchairs.
The careful planning of a hiking tour will ensure that you also derive the maximum pleasure and enjoyment from it. Please take the time to contact the local information centre and enquire about route and weather conditions before setting off. Your intended hiking trail may be fully or partially closed, depending on the time of year and weather conditions.
