Anniviers is apparently derived from Latin "ad nives", which means "at the snow". The eternal snow of the Valaisian Alps forms a stark contrast to the vineyards in the Rhône valley.
The mountain trains running from Grimentz upwards to Bendolla and from Crêt du Midi down to Vercorin have facilitated this hike of the leisurely kind. After an easy descent to Le Chèquet the path ascends, becoming a bit steeper on its way to Orzival via Les Tsougdires. The trail then descends once again, down to Crêt du Midi. Gorgeous views of the Rhône valley and the peaks of the surrounding mountains make this hike a wonderful experience. The starting point, Grimentz, and the destination, Vercorin (its location reminds one of an eagle's nest or eyrie) are lovely villages with many wooden houses built in the traditional Wallis style.
