Lake Toma - the source of the River Rhine, Graubünden

At 1,320 km long, the Rhine is one of Europe's mighty rivers, at the start of which lies the idyllic Lake Toma.
High up in the mountains, the picturesque Lake Toma appears at first glance to be just another mountain lake - yet it is anything but! The meadows of cotton grass and the boulders surrounding the small lake hide the secret of the source of the Rhine. Although here still only a gentle stream of water, standing at the birthplace of this famous river which flows 1320 km through half of Europe before entering the sea as a mighty river in Holland is none the less impressive. Follow its course on the legendary Swiss Veloland cycle route, or walk the somewhat shorter route up to the family-friendly SAC Maighels Hut, with its wonderful views across the pastureland up to the Oberalp Pass.
