You emerge from the prehistoric caves on the southwest wall of the Ebenalp at the Wildkirchli – a tiny chapel, clinging to the rock.
Beside it, the Aescher guesthouse snuggles under an overhang in the cliff, inviting visitors to linger on its sunny terrace – and admire the vast panorama, one of the most dramatic and beautiful in Switzerland. The views stretch to the romantic hills of the Appenzellerland and as far as Lake Constance. The whole of this massif, the Alpstein, is magnificent hiking area, with four cable cars and 28 welcoming inns. Since the folk of Appenzell are known for their wit, it's no surprise that you'll also find a Joke Trail – between Heiden and Walzenhausen.
