Rapperswil-Jona is the kind of town that makes you wish
you were a painter. Perched on a rocky outcrop above
Lake Zürich are the castle and church; lying at their feet
is the medieval Old Town, with its quaint alleys and
celebrated rose garden.
At its heart is the promenade
between restaurants, old chestnut trees and the harbour,
where you can hire boats to cross over to the islands of
Ufenau and Lützelau, or pass under the causeway to
reach the tranquil Obersee. You can also walk across the
water, over the longest wooden bridge in Switzerland,
part of the famous Way of St. James pilgrims’ route to
Spain. The view of the Alps from here is just as bewitching
as a trip into the countryside around Rapperswil,
whether on foot or by bike; while the nearby Linth region
is regarded as a paradise for inline skaters.
