Montreux invariably delights its guests: with the most beautiful lake promenade in Switzerland, for starters. "This must be heaven", sang an enchanted Freddie Mercury.

Anyone standing beside his statue at sunset, on the promenade that stretches from Vevey to Montreux, knows what he was feeling. Stretching out at the foot of the Old Town, the lake almost seems to be on fire. The palms rustle in the mild breeze and flowerbeds stretch all the way to the Château de Chillon, which treats visitors to 900 years of history – and is almost as famous as the Montreux Jazz Festival. At least once, though, guests should turn their backs on the capital of the Vaud Riviera: to visit the terraced vineyards of the Lavaux between Montreux and Lausanne, a UNESCO World Heritage site – and another piece of paradise.
