Leading from Thusis in the north to Chiavenna in the sunny south, the spectacular Via Spluga over the Splügen pass is a long-distance cultural footpath through an exceptional mountain landscape. Already 2,000 years ago this was the main route for people, goods and ideas between Graubünden and the Valchiavenna.
Nowadays, walkers can travel carefree, thanks to packages that include luggage transportation from stage to stage. The four-day route leads through the breathtakingly deep Viamala gorge – often only several metres wide – past Zillis, home to the most beautiful painted church ceiling in Europe, and through unspoilt historic mountain villages and the Roffla gorge before passing along rocky paths over the Splügen pass to Italy.
