The Coeur du Valais region calls itself “a paradise for excursions”. And it keeps its word, with a variety of opportunities for enjoying nature close to the towns. There is something to suit just about every visitor, from grown-up adventurers to budding young heroes – indeed, families feel instantly at home here. A highlight for guests as well as for locals is the Val d’Hérens with its “queens”: proud, pure-bred and high-spirited cows of the Hérens breed. At the
cantonal festivities in May, determined – but bloodless
– fights result in the crowning of the queen of the queens,
in front of thousands of spectators.
