For the valleys of the Malcantone offer an enormous scenic variety in a compact area – from the turquoise lake in the valley over the rolling hills to high peaks with sensational views. The highlight here is a ridge hike: the high trail from Monte Lema (1,624 m) to Monte Tamaro, one of the most beautiful in the Prealps. The route swings between Switzerland and Italy, and offers the finest views over southern Switzerland: from Lake Maggiore, taking in the Centovalli, the Maggia and Verzasca valleys and the valleys around Lugano, to the high Alps, and Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn. An added treat is to stay the night at the simple mountain accommodation on Monte Lema – and watch the sunset bathe the panorama in pink.
