Mendrisiotto
Up here you feel as though you are on another planet – and not only because of the Planet Trail, packed with fascinating information.
The views from Monte Generoso, the most important panoramic mountain in Ticino, are simply overwhelming. In just 40 minutes, the cog railway climbs from Capolago on Lake Lugano up to the 1,704-m-high roof of the world. The view stretches from the Swiss and Italian lakes (Lugano, Como, Varese and Maggiore), over the city of Lugano and deep into the Po valley, and from the Apennines as far as the high Alps. The Mendrisiotto at the southernmost tip of Switzerland lies at your feet: high time, then, to head back down, and immerse yourself in a region that is scenically and culturally unique – and, not by chance, the adopted home of many artists.

Geological treasure chest.

Two hundred million years ago, San Giorgio was immersed under a sea a hundred metres deep. When the sea receded, it left behind archaic landscapes and beautifully preserved fossils, including 80 species of fish and 30 species of marine and land reptiles. Walkers on the hiking trail around the Monte San Giorgio, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, can learn all about the flora, fauna and geological formations of this mountain.

How to get there
