Jungfrau Region
The Jungfraujoch is the most famous excursion destination in Switzerland. As you alight at the highest railway station in Europe you are greeted by an unforgettable sight...
Countless peaks framing the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau; alpine choughs, those feathered acrobats of the heights, tumbling down towards the Bernese Oberland; and creeping into the Valais, the Aletsch glacier – the frozen heart of the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn UNESCO World Heritage site. The views from the observation terrace of the Sphinx (not to mention the thin air, at 3,571 m) take your breath away. Up on the Jungfraujoch you can also visit the subterranean Ice Palace with its sculptures, ride on a sled pulled by huskies, or climb up to the Mönchsjoch hut, before it is time to head back down on the little train – past superlative natural sights including the North Wall of the Eiger, the Sea of Ice, the Kleine Scheidegg and the Lauberhorn. While the Jungfrau railway is the best known in the region, the cable car to the Schilthorn is also worldfamous: James Bond memorably rode it “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” to reach the panoramic peak nearly 3,000 m up. Then there’s the sunny viewpoint of the Männlichen, which you can access both from Wengen and Grindelwald. Four world-class resorts in all make up the Jungfrau Region, with its superb network of railways and cable cars: Grindelwald, Wengen, Mürren and Lauterbrunnen. All make ideal base camps for experiencing nature: whether on the 500 km of footpaths, 420 km of cycle and mountain bike routes, Nordic walking trails, rock climbs or even golf courses.
