Lago Maggiore
There cannot be many educational establishments where so much laughter is heard: for the students at the theatre school of the Teatro Dimitri – which also houses a Museum of Comedy – are training to be clowns and mime artists.
They are following a local tradition, but the people living around Lake Maggiore have plenty of other reasons to smile too. They live in the Alps, yet have a piece of the Mediterranean on their doorstep. They may have to share their wonderful lake with their Italian neighbours, but that still leaves plenty of space for rest and recreation on and off the water. Those seeking a more spiritual experience can climb the steps to the Madonna del Sasso: a pilgrimage church offering glorious views of the lake, and one of the most popular excursions in the region.
