Goms
Nature is the overriding characteristic of this region.
That is true of the longest river of ice in the Alps, the worldfamous Aletsch glacier; it is true of the wonderfully unspoilt valleys of the Binntal Natural Park; and it is equally true of the mountain villages, their appearance virtually unchanged for centuries. The Goms stretches up as far as the legendary Furka, Grimsel and Nufenen passes. Particularly family-friendly is the little resort of Bellwald on its high sunny terrace; especially musical, the village of Ernen, which every year stages a Festival of the Future.

Valley of minerals.

Among mineral aficionados, the wild and romantic Binntal is a classic: more than 160 varieties of crystal, some extremely rare, are found in this nature reserve, which borders directly on the oldest natural park in Piedmont in Italy. Old smugglers’ routes, now marked as footpaths and mountain bike trails, lead up to the passes in just a few hours. The geological centre and educational trail reveal many of the valley’s hidden secrets.

The Jungfrau-Aletsch Region is nowlabelled World Natural Heritage by UNESCO.Known for the extraordinary beauty of its land-scape,it is the first and only site in the Alps tobear this honorable distinction.
