The Val d’Anniviers looks like a film set. Small villages
perch on hilltops, surrounded by high peaks.
The old
houses and barns are snuggled up close to one another,
their wooden façades – burnt black by the sun – contrasting
picturesquely with the fiery red geraniums in the
window boxes. Sierre-Anniviers is also an ideal base
for scaling one of the area’s five mountains higher than
4,000 m, such as the Bishorn, which even hikers can
tackle. The Pfyn forest, meanwhile – the largest pine forest
in Switzerland – is regarded as one of the country’s best
conserved landscapes.
