From typical mountain villages at the foot of the glaciers
lead the first of a total of 800 km of contrasting footpaths.
Easy for families lower down, more demanding at
higher altitudes. The latter include two thrilling multi-day
treks through protected areas: the Tour des Combins,
and the Tour du St-Bernard, culminating at the eponymous
hospice. Meanwhile, adrenalin-fuelled activities
increasingly attract devotees from all over the world: for
climbing, paragliding, and mountain-biking on more than
400 km of challenging cross-country and downhill routes,
including the cult Tour du Mont-Fort. Verbier, the capital
of the region on its high sunny plateau, is also the setting
for top-class cultural events, such as the prestigious
Verbier Festival.
