Lake Lugano Region
The biggest city on the sunny side of Switzerland may be one of the country’s most important financial centres, but by no means everything in the Lugano region revolves around banks and business.
With its Mediterranean atmosphere, this is a place for strolling: through lush parks and gardens full of flowers, past impressive villas and churches, and along the shore of the shimmering blue lake. And for sipping, under the southern sun, a glass of Merlot – the wine that accounts for 90% of local production. Best place to do this is in the shady garden of a typical Ticino inn – or grotto – where the wine is served in an earthenware boccalino, and local delicacies enjoyed at outdoor granite tables: goat’s cheese, salami and mortadella, minestrone and polenta or risotto. What a life!
