Simplon, Great St. Bernard and Forclaz: the Martigny
region is the gateway to the south. Which is no doubt
where the relaxed little town’s appreciation of the good
things in life comes from.
Of course, gastronomic
delicacies play a leading role, along with the wine made
here. But between meals one needs nourishment of
another kind. Hence the outstanding museums that have
appeared in Martigny, such as the modern Fondation
Pierre Gianadda, which brings to life the region’s Roman
past – but also exhibits everything from vintage cars to
world-class art. Or the museum devoted to the cuddly
St. Bernard dogs with the brandy barrel around their
neck. Many other attractions beckon too: not least the
winegrowing trail to Leuk, dinosaur footprints in Emosson
and two thermal baths.
