Uri/Gotthard
Even today, the most spectacular north-south crossing over the Alps is the legendary “Tremola” – the winding cobbled road over the summit of the Gotthard pass.
A classic motorbike journey, this route also attracts romantics and history buffs, who make the journey from Andermatt to Airolo in a historic, horse-drawn postal carriage. But the canton of Uri, on the northern side of the pass, is also home to many other attractions. Thanks to ideal weather conditions, Lake Uri – the southernmost arm of Lake Lucerne – attracts not just windsurfers but also sun-worshippers and others seeking idyllic bathing spots. And branching off the Reuss valley, along which the Gotthard motorway passes, hidden side valleys are waiting to be explored, full of authentic, unspoilt mountain charm.
