Lake Lucerne
As the Gallia steams past Brunnen on its way from Lucerne to Flüelen, even passengers in first class put down their silver cutlery to savour a piece of history.
The Schiller memorial stone just around the corner is a reminder of the author of Switzerland’s great national epic, William Tell. Just after that, the steamer calls in at Rütli, after which passengers may catch a glimpse of the legendary Tell Plateau. It would be hard to experience Switzerland’s early history in a more stylish way than on one of Lake Lucerne’s five paddle steamers. But there are other ways: the SGV fleet comprises 20 boats in all, which connect historic sites up and down the lake. They also open up a host of possibilities for excursions and round trips – not least on the famous shoreside mountain railways.
