This city is best experienced from above: from the tower
of the cathedral of St. Nicholas, for example, or the
heights of the Bourguillon Gate, easily reached on the
little tourist train.
The view down into the heart of the
lively Old Town with its protected houses, city walls and
14 towers – a view straight into the heart of the Middle
Ages – is fabulous. Fribourg is a jewel of Gothic architecture,
and thanks to its location on the border between the
French-speaking and German-speaking parts of Switzerland,
a bridge between two cultures: a role it plays with
charm and enthusiasm. It is no accident that this city on
the River Sarine is both a multicultural university centre,
a thriving forum for arts and culture – and of course a
stronghold of gastronomy. In short: an all-round experience.
