For 800 years a mighty ring wall has protected this little
town. Almost fully preserved, and the only one in the
country that you can walk along, it no longer keeps
strangers out, but welcomes visitors with open arms.
From its high ramparts, it offers views over the picturesque
Old Town of Murten, the winemaking slopes of
Mont Vully, and the lake in between. Along the shore are
the sun terraces of several fine restaurants – as well as
many kilometres of delightful cycle and skating trails. For
the region around Lake Murten is famous for its gentle
and scenic cycling; no wonder that every year Murten
stages the first in Switzerland’s calendar of “slowUp”
events, when roads are closed to motorised traffic, and
people of all ages explore the pleasures of travelling
under their own steam.
