Thanks to its favourable microclimate, the family resort of Château d'Oex has become a mecca for hot-air balloon enthusiasts. Other guests are happy, too – for it means they can take passenger flights, year-round.
From up on high, they have a bird's eye view of the 350 km of footpaths and hiking trails that crisscross the magical landscape of the Pays d'Enhaut, high up in Canton Vaud. Back on the ground – but still up on the alp – guests can visit one of the weathered alpine huts where dairy farmers make the Etivaz cheese, the "little brother" of the world-famous Gruyère. And on the walk back down, visitors are invariably struck by how colourful the scene is: with the green of the meadows, the brown of the chalets, the blue of the rivers – and the multicoloured glory of the flowers.
How to get there
Public Transport: Geneva- Montreux by SBB, then take the train from MOB to Château-d’Oex.
By car: Auto route Geneva - Lausanne - Vevey - Freiburg
Take the Bulle exit and follow the road to Château-d’Oex.
Other/Air: Connections from the international airports of Geneva and Zürich.
From Geneva-Cointrin: By train to Montreux, then by MOB to Château-d’Oex.
From Zürich-Kloten: by train to Bern - Spiez - Zweisimmen and then by MOB to Château-d’Oex.
