Wild mountain streams crash through the gorges, far removed from civilization and the sunny vineyards one usually associates with the Valais. Thanks to the clever engineering skills of the local farmers, small irrigation channels called "Suonen" are alimented by glacier water. They have been in place since the 14th century. Today they are also great places to guide one through the landscape: well-groomed hiking trails follow them. Nonetheless, the the trails sometimes veer close to the edge and require that hikers are free of vertigo and walk well.
How to get there:
Drive or take public transportation from Spiez/ Kandersteg via Lötschberg or from Brig to Ausserberg or Eggerberg.
Hike Along the Suonen in the Baltschieder Valley
Eggerberg / Sonnige Halden
