The massive glacier covering parts of the Wildstrubel chain of mountains measures about 10 square kilometers and is misnamed "Plaine Morte", which literally means "dead plain". At 3,000 metres above sea level, it may be reached from Montana by cable car.
Even on the hottest summer day this is a focal point for the many summer skiers using the three ski lifts. Many guests simply choose to bask in the sun and enjoy the views on the terrace of the Plaine-Morte restaurant at the end of the cable car line. Legend has it that this area used to be covered with rich pastures. However, these days, no one goes home hungry: there are plenty of seats in the local restaurant. The memory of the fabulous 360° views will stay with you long after you have left the area. You can see the sun-drenched plateau of Crans-Montana, the Rhone Valley, and all the Southern alps around Valais, stretching from Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn.
