Just like a unpenetrable fortress the Alpsteinmassiv juts out high above the undulating hills of the Appenzell: its highest point is 2502-meter-high Mt. Säntis. The ride in the gondola is breath-taking: take in Lake Constance, the Vorarlberg, the Graubünden, Glarus and Bernese Alps. On a clear day one can even see the Vosges Mountains and the Black Forest.
Just like a unpenetrable fortress the Alpstein Massif juts out high above the undulating hills of the Appenzell: its highest point is 2502-meter Mt. Säntis. On the summit of this towering giant there is a futuristic-looking building, the communication station of the meteorological observatory which has graced this mountain since 1882, albeit not in its present reincarnation.

The views are just as impressive closer-by: peak after peak juts out and between them there are rich green valleys, small lakes and tiny hamlets.
