Summit Walks

It is worth taking the cable car up to the Bettmerhorn or Eggishorn if only to get a sense of just how colossal the Great Aletsch Glacier really is.

The views from the Monte Generoso, one of the most panoramic mountains in Ticino, are truly magnificent, extending from the Po valley and the Lago di Como as far as the Gotthard, the Bernese and even the Walliser Alps!

Next to the panorama restaurant at the summit, there is a 70-m-long tunnel leading through solid rock into a "grotto" in the north wall with its two look-out windows, the so-called "Stockhorn-Augen" or Stockhorn Eyes.

High above Lake Walen, facing the prominent Churfirsten, a geologically interesting mountain chain, you will find Flumserberg, the vacation destination. You can reach the Maschgen Ridge, a fabulous vantage point, by gondola train.

At the mountain station (3454 m), simply walk through the tunnel and out onto the Jungfraufirn.

You can ascend Mt. Pilatus either straight from Kriens/Lucerne or "from behind" on the historical cog railway from Alpnachstad.

At Botta mountain station (3000 m), there is a flight of steps behind the house leading up to a viewing platform.

The cog railway from Montreux takes us up to four very special attractions at the top: a marmot sanctuary, the Rambertia botanical garden, the Plein-Roc restaurant, plus the chance to spend a night in a yurt.

The Alpin-Express gondola-style cable car takes you from Saas Fee up to the Felskinn (2989 m).

From the mountain station (2453 m), there is a 7-km-long panoramic trail leading round the Schafberg to the mountain station of the Pontresina – Alp Languard (2330 m) chairlift; the hike takes about 2 1/2 hours.

The walk starts at the viewing terrace of the mountain station and rotating restaurant.

The 1922-m-high Fronalpstock enthroned above the car-free village of Stoos in Central Switzerland is best reached by cable car.

This leisurely, 3-km-long walk, which includes a gentle climb to cover a difference in altitude of just 60 m, is a delight for young and old alike, for both serious walkers and those who prefer only the occasional stroll.

Well over a hundred years ago, countless incorrigible adventurers and romantics, including one Mark Twain, journeyed to Central Switzerland specially to see the legendary sunrise on Mt. Rigi.

Criss-crossing the Alpine garden next to the mountain station are several paths which taken together are nearly one kilometre long.

Europe's highest cable car whisks you up onto the Klein Matterhorn over gigantic glacial crevasses.
