In addition to low prices, the Fribourg Alps offer a mild climate free from numbingly cold temperatures, with virtually no risk of avalanches and short journey times. But most important of all are the many delicious regional specialities that are served – along with a warm welcome – in the mountain huts. Don a pair of snowshoes and a wild, romantic landscape opens up before you. By day or by moonlight, you will find routes both easy and challenging – and all manner of paths to wintry joy.

In the magical landscapes around Les Paccots, Charmey, Jaun, Schwarzsee, La Chia, Moléson, La Berra and the Intyamon valley, well over 100 km of snowshoe trails are waiting to be explored. The adventure won’t cost the earth: you can rent equipment inexpensively at any winter sports resort.

Top tip

For several months, folk in Charmey are happy even when the weather is less than perfect: this means it’s time to visit the new “Bains de la Gruyère” spa at the edge of the village and enjoy the 33°C water.
