Ticino

Sunny Ticino has a winter too: a very special one.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to flee to a winter that wasn’t grey and grim? In Ticino, everyone can find a winter to suit them. A pleasantly mild climate and plenty of sunshine set the tone for life around the lakes.
The often spring-like weather makes you want to linger at a street café for a cappuccino; the sun sparkling on the deep-blue lakes, and the walkers out for a stroll, awaken memories of summer. Winter is also an ideal time to explore Ticino’s green oases on foot, or to indulge in a host of invigorating outdoor activities.

Carefree days

The picturesque markets are more enjoyable to explore at this time of year, rather than in the busy summer months. Follow a stroll around town with a spot of culture, perhaps: a trip to the impressive castles in Bellinzona, or a visit to an exhibition, or one of the canton’s 70-odd museums and galleries. Last but not least: a visit to one of the many charming and characterful bars, to relive the pleasures of the day over a glass of Ticino wine.

Sports activities beyond the piste

Thanks to its sunny climate, Ticino offers a host of outdoor pursuits in every season. For example, golfers of all levels, from beginner to expert, will find it makes an ideal year-round destination: Ascona, Losone and Lugano all have beautifully landscaped and well-maintained courses. Riders, meanwhile, can explore the canton’s richly varied landscapes on horseback, with lessons and hacks offered at a variety of locations.

Fun in the snow

Whether you are into freestyle in the halfpipe, alpine skiing or cross-country, Ticino’s well-prepared pistes and cross-country trails offer plenty of variety. Airolo, with its extensive slopes, is a justly popular winter sports resort, but Carì and Bosco Gurin also offer quality skiing, whilst sunny Nara can claim to have the longest toboggan ride in Ticino. In Campra and Bedretto, meanwhile, superb cross-country trails lead through a winter landscape of fairytale charm.
