Lötschberg

Highlight: With the Valais stretching out to one side and the Bernese Oberland on the other, you could call Lötschberg the pinnacle of the winter sports world.
Except that people here, instead of shouting from the rooftops, prefer to keep quiet about conditions perfect for winter sports lovers who appreciate tranquillity. As at Lauchernalp on the Valais side, which offers sublime freeriding from 2,000 m up to 3,111 m and, along the ridge, one of the highest winter walking paths in Europe.

High circuit

The Bernese side, meanwhile, is a dream come true for Nordic skiers. Kandersteg is the third-largest cross-country skiing area in Switzerland: insiders particularly rate the impressive high circuit on Sunnbüel, and the illuminated night trails. But there's plenty of variety throughout the region: Kiental, for example, at the foot of the Blüemlisalp, is terrific for tobogganing.

Unique culture

Lötschberg is not only about sports: the valleys here are home to unique cultural traditions. Especially the Lötschental, where the famous wooden masks tell of demons and other figures from folk tales, and return to life every year during carnival as the terrifying "Tschäggättä".

Top tip

The Lötschberg's hidden secret is called Jeizinen. This small village, 1,500 m up on a sunny terrace above Gampel, has panoramic views but little in the way of luxury or nightlife: just pure peace and quiet.
