Engadin St. Moritz

Pure sunshine: Mountains! Freedom! Sunlight! Located on the southern side of the Swiss Alps, this region is famous for its inspiring panoramas, its dramatic mountain backdrop and its exceptionally sunny climate: skies are blue for around 322 days a year.
That’s a record for Switzerland – as well as the reason for the celebrated soft light that has long inspired writers and painters.

Sparkling Champagne climate

The Engadine sun is brighter, the “champagne climate” drier, and the snow surer here than elsewhere. Thanks to the exceptional beauty of the lakes-and-mountains scenery and the variety of facilities and services on offer, the largest ski region in Switzerland is also one of the most popular. The Engadine’s worldwide fame, however, is mainly due to the resort of St. Moritz. Here winter sports were invented, more than 150 years ago; Switzerland’s first light bulb unveiled, in 1878; and the first ski lift installed, in 1935. It has staged not one but two Winter Olympic Games. A couple of Switzerland’s most historic hotels are located here. But above all, it is the international jet set that creates the resort’s champagne mood, adding to St. Moritz’s fame winter after winter.

Powered by the Maloja wind, skiers and snowboarders glide over frozen Lake Silvaplana behind colourful kites. The area is known as the birthplace of snowkiting; beginners can learn the ropes at a dedicated school.
