As a result, this area still has the feel of a winter fairy tale, with its sun-darkened chalets, its pine forests blanketed in snow, and its wonderful tranquillity, high above the lowland mists.

A Nordic experience

Of course you can also ski and snowboard. But here by the Lötschberg, the emphasis is on Nordic sports. The trails around the typical chalet village of Kandersteg make this one of Switzerland’s top three cross-country ski destinations, while the ice climbing is regarded as some of the most challenging in the world. A real gem is the Blausee, a lake famous for its organic trout farm. The Kiental, meanwhile, feels so far removed from the rest of the world that all that remains in this valley is stillness – and unspoilt nature. Visitors to the Lötschberg find not just good value, but also a great deal of variety – from the fastest toboggan run in the Bernese Oberland (Lake Oeschinen to Kandersteg) to terrain perfect for magical dog-sledding.

Even the journey here is an adventure: travel in speed and comfort on the Lötschberger train from Bern or Spiez to Reichenbach and Kandersteg. Views from the panoramic windows of the snowy landscape are included.
