Some 100 lifts carry guests up to the very peaks of snowsports pleasure – and as high as 3,300 m, to a panorama of superlatives. And throughout the area lie enchanting landscapes, thrilling toboggan runs, idyllic snowshoe tours, 110 km of cross-country ski trails and numerous artificial ice rinks.

The finest flavours

The heart of the Valais can offer just about everything that snowsports lovers could wish for. As important as the abundant sunshine and fresh alpine air is the local gastronomy. While famous specialities such as cheese fondue and raclette appear on just about every menu, so do lesser-known but equally mouth-watering traditional dishes. The range of wines served with them is surprising – but then the Sion Region is the largest winegrowing area in Switzerland. The capital of the Valais, meanwhile, also offers a host of diversions away from the slopes – everything from shopping tours to cultural visits and gourmet dinners.

A particularly enjoyable way to discover the snow-covered surroundings of the family resort of Thyon is on a dog sled. You quickly learn how to handle the dogs – and then you’re off, into the magical, wide-open spaces.
