Deep gorges and vertiginous mountain sides are typical of the side valleys of the Valais. Nor is the Mattertal any exception. The sun is so rare here during the winter months that there are some places in the valley bottom that do not catch a single ray of sunshine at all. This cannot be said of the holiday resort of Grächen, however. Located on a natural terrace facing southwest and with magnificent views of the surrounding mountains, it has plenty of sunshine. This hike from the centre of the village up to Bärgji-Alp is a panoramic tour of the highest order. And at the turning point on Bärgji-Alp, there is a quaint mountain restaurant making it an ideal spot for a break.
Grächen - Egga - Bärgji - Egga - Grächen
The tour begins at the post office in Grächen. From here, follow the winter hiking trail No. 1 as far as Cardinal-Depot. There, turn right on trail No. 2, which will take you through a beautiful stretch of forest. After reaching the road, the trail continues on towards Bärgji. The Bärgji-Alp restaurant is the turning point. From there, simply follow the road back down to Grächen.
