Walk-in
From Pazzallo mid-station, follow the hiking path heading towards San
Salvatore for around 200 metres, and then turn right onto a newly-made
path by the "Achtung Steinschlag" sign ["Beware of rock-falls"].
It zig-zags through the steeply sloping woodland to the start of the
via ferrata, at around 680 m.
San Salvatore via ferrata
The route across two vertical to overhanging sections of wall, in part
also with grassy sections, is continuously secured with a thick steel
rope; however, iron stirrups are only in place at some key points of
the climb. Where the climb comes out, head left for a short while, then
right into the wood and onto the wide hiking path. The next part is
easy walking, and finally brings you out by the chapel on the peak of
San Salvatore (912 m).
Descent
Come down using the funicular (how else?). Most of the 200,000 visitors every year do exactly the same.

Character of the route
An athletic via ferrata, the kind of climb which the Lugano mountain guide Delio Ossola (killed on the Matterhorn) would have wished for; this via ferrata on the north wall of San Salvatore is dedicated to him. Strong biceps are needed for the exertions of the climb on the rope; ferrata devotees with delicate hands are advised to wear cycling gloves.
Difficulty
K5. Very difficult.
Valley/Starting-point
Lugano, Stazione Paradiso (302 m); the Gotthard express trains stop here hourly. Also by bus route no. 2 from Lugano station to the Funicolare San Salvatore funicular; this runs from mid-March through to mid-November. Take the funicular to Pazzallo mid-station (492 m).
