The church was originally part of the Franciscan monastery, which was founded in 1490. The fresco of the crucifixion, painted by Bernardino Luini (1530) on the dividing wall between the nave and the choir is very famous and valuable.

Its most striking features are the special roof and the checkerboard like pattern on the walls – dark and pale marble from local quarries. It is worth making the long trip from Locarno in order to visit, perhaps combining it with a walk around Fusio or a meal in one of the typical little restaurants.
