Das uralte Kirchlein, im Volksmund "Sant Jöüri" genannt, thront auf dem nordwestlich gelegenen St. Georgsberg bei Berschis, dessen höchster Punkt ca. 150 m über der Talsohle liegt. Es ist wahrscheinlich aus einer frühmittelalterlichen Kirchenburg hervorgegangen. Archäologische Funde lassen auf eine frühere römische Verteidigungsanlage schliessen.

This church in the municipality of Alvaschein is one of the oldest sacred buildings in Switzerland. The present building dates from 800 AD. It was part of a monastery which was then dissolved in 1154 - there is no longer any trace of the other buildings. Characteristic of the Carolingian style of church architecture are the three apses which have remained intact here in Mistail.
