The art museum Winterthur possesses one of the most beautiful modern art collections in Switzerland. But not only that: the new building dating from 1995 by the Basel architects Gigon and Guyer enthuses even non-amateurs. The old building houses an overwhelming number of masterpieces of French Impressionist art as well as works from other modern art movements. In the architecturally completely contrasting new build, both established and as yet unknown contemporary artists present their work in temporary exhibitions. Due to reconstruction the museum will be closed until presumably spring 2010.

The ambience of a private residence is palpable in Villa Flora, where Hedy and Arthur Hahnloser-Bühler built their collection of modern French painters. Focal points are the artist groups of "Nabis" and "Fauves" with Bonnard, Vallotton, Vuillard, Matisse and Rouault.

The main focus of the collection is on Dutch painting in the 17th century. There is also one of Europe's most important collections of portrait miniatures, with over 500 on display.

Learning by touching: In the Winterthur Natural History Museum, young scientists are allowed to touch the animals. Like little badgers they can sniff around in an oversized badger's burrow and label and display their finds from forest and meadow in the drawer-museum. They will be accompanied by the popular doll Kerala, which is also ideal for a birthday party. In a playful manner, a museum teacher guides the children through the various themes.
