Kloster
Home to Switzerland's most famous Renaissance fresco: The crucifixion of Bernardino Luini (1529), one of Leonardo da Vinci's pupils. The monastery was founded in 1490, the construction of the church began in 1499 and was consecrated in 1515.
A significant building with a Renaissance facade. In the interior you will find numerous frescoes and important Baroque decorations. Founded probably in the early Middle Ages, it became a Parish Church as early as 818, and in the year 1078 it was elevated to Collegiata. Since 1888 it has been a Cathedral.
A singularly beautiful panorama of the pre-Alpine landscape, the lakes and the snow-capped Alps. Among the most prominent attraction is the church S. Maria degli Angeli, a project of the renowned architect Mario Botta. As a modern house of worship it has a distinctly innovative character.
Museums
Up until now, Villa Ciani has served as headquarters of the City's Fine Arts Collection and to all the exhibitions connected to it, whereas in future, with the prospect of turning it into a historical museum, the villa will also host temporary historical exhibitions.
Since 5 March, the “Museo d’Arte Moderna” has been renamed the “Museo d’Arte”. The new focus seeks to combine the fine arts’ exhibition programme with the activities associated with the appreciation of Lugano’s artistic heritage.
With its permanent collection and changing exhibitions, the Museo Cantonale d'Arte offers a cross-section of the art history of the 19th and 20th centuries, with a special focus on the Ticino and its links to the wider international art scene.
Immersed in the wonderful tropical park of the Heleneum the Museo delle Culture of Lugano holds one of the best European Art Collection of the Southern sea. The visitors itinerary allows both the merely curious and the connoisseurs to explore the creativity and deep meanings of cultures of the South East Asia and Oceania.
The Museum hosts precious evidence of Hermann Hesse’s last 43 years in Montagnola up until his death.
